{"id":3190,"date":"2022-05-17T18:44:49","date_gmt":"2022-05-17T22:44:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chiledoc.cl\/en\/?p=3190"},"modified":"2022-05-23T18:45:07","modified_gmt":"2022-05-23T22:45:07","slug":"chilean-docs-rise-on-world-stage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chiledoc.cl\/en\/chilean-docs-rise-on-world-stage\/","title":{"rendered":"Chilean Docs Rise on World Stage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/global\/docs-rise-world-stage-chile-cannes-1235269408\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Variety<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Thrown into the limelight by the Oscar nomination for Maite Alberdi\u2019s \u201cThe Mole Agent\u201d in 2021, Chilean documentaries been growing in stature worldwide for years.<\/p>\n<p>At Cannes, venerable Patricio Guzman world premieres his latest doc, \u201cMy Imaginary Country\u201d (\u201cMi Pa\u00eds Imaginario\u201d) as a special screening, following on his lauded \u201cThe Cordillera of Dreams\u201d which was awarded the 2019 L\u2019\u0153il d\u2019Or award for Cannes\u2019 best documentary. Matias Rojas\u2019 \u201cOur Memory\u201d will be among the spotlighted projects at Cannes Docs. A Chilean Docs in Progress showcase, slated for May 23 at Cannes Doc Day, is creating considerable expectation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChilean documentaries often reflect the major social problems the country is undergoing,\u201d  says Chiledoc director Paula Ossandon.<\/p>\n<p>One instance, she notes, is a number of films dealing with the great social upheaval that took place in Chile from October 2019 that are beginning to surface, led by \u201cMy Imaginary Country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are also upcoming projects about our president-elect Gabriel Boric, the world\u2019s youngest president, such as the German-Chilean-U.S. co-production \u2018Gabriel,\u2019 which screened at Canada\u2019s Hot Docs Forum,\u201d she observes, adding: \u201cThe current rewrite of Chile\u2019s constitution is another theme of interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ossandon notes that there are also more docs exploring gender dissidence and identity. \u201cEthnic identity (\u2018On Suspicion: Zokunentu\u2019) is also becoming a more relevant and recurrent theme in Chilean documentaries,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>The showcase comprises four docs at editing stage. One, \u201cNotes for a Film,\u201d a Chilean-French co-production, is directed by Ignacio Ag\u00fcero. Based on Belgian engineer Gustave Verniory\u2019s memoir \u201c10 Years in Araucania 1889-1899,\u201d it details the transformation of this unexplored territory of at the turn of the 20th century.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Fabulous Gold Harvesting Machine,\u201d helmed and co-produced by Alfredo Pourailly, follows 62-year-old Toto, the last gold miner standing in far-flung Tierra del Fuego, who is in poor health. His son designs a machine that should alleviate his punishing work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalqueridas,\u201d (meaning \u201cunloved\u201d) by Tana Gilbert and produced by Paola Castillo, reconstructs the experience of motherhood by women in prison, shot with banned cell phones. At the Visions du R\u00e9el Pitch last year, it won the opportunity to participate in the German Dok Leipzig festival and its market, DOK Co-Pro Market 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Rutllant\u2019s \u201cAsteroid 2518\u201d takes in the asteroid that bears her family name. Rutllant\u2019s journey of self-discovery leads her to unearth details of the life and work of her great grandfather, a polemical astrophysicist who attempted to build the largest telescope in Chile\u2019s southern hemisphere during the Cold War.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Variety.
