For decades, his films brought Chile’s recent political history, the memory of the dictatorship and the ways in which that past continues to shape the present to audiences beyond the country. At festivals and cinemas around the world, Guzmán’s moving perspective on the Chilean experience found a resonance that transcended borders.

One of the defining milestones of this international trajectory was “The Battle of Chile”, a trilogy filmed mainly in 1973, with its three parts completed between 1975 and 1979. The film crew included Patricio Guzmán as director, Jorge Müller on camera, Federico Elton in production, Bernardo Menz on sound and José Bartolomé as assistant director, with Pedro Chaskel later joining as editor. Filming also received support from French filmmaker Chris Marker, while the editing was carried out in Cuba with the contribution of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC).

The first part, “The Insurrection of the Bourgeoisie”, was presented at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes in 1975, and the second, “The Coup d’État”, returned to the same section in 1976.

The film soon took on a significance that extended far beyond Chile. During the 1970s and 1980s, “The Battle of Chile” was screened in 34 countries across Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia, becoming one of the defining works of Guzmán’s international career and a gateway for audiences around the world to discover, through documentary, the political and social processes unfolding in Chile.

But Cannes would not be an isolated chapter. Guzmán returned to the French festival time and again: “The Pinochet Case” was presented at Critics’ Week in 2001, while “Salvador Allende” was part of the Official Selection, Out of Competition, in 2004. Years later, “Nostalgia for the Light” was presented as a Special Screening in 2010, followed by “The Cordillera of Dreams” in 2019 and “My Imaginary Country” in 2022.

The international presence of his work extended far beyond Cannes. In 1987, “In the Name of God” received the Grand Prix at Festival dei Popoli in Florence, and the following year it received the Peace Film Prize at the Berlinale. A decade later, “Chile, Obstinate Memory” received the Audience Award at the Marseille festival and continued its journey through festivals including Hot Docs, Sundance, Toronto, San Francisco and Leipzig. In 2001, “The Pinochet Case” received the Grand Prix at the Marseille festival and later the Golden Gate Award in San Francisco.

International recognition continued to accompany his filmography over the following decades. “Nostalgia for the Light” received the European Film Academy’s Best Documentary award in 2010; “The Pearl Button” received the Silver Bear at the Berlinale in 2015; and “The Cordillera of Dreams” received the L’Œil d’Or for Best Documentary at Cannes in 2019, followed by the Goya Award for Best Ibero-American Film.

In 2019, IDFA dedicated a retrospective to his work and welcomed him as Guest of Honour, describing him as “one of the few living legends of documentary cinema”. The festival highlighted the influence of his work over more than five decades and his cinema’s ability to transform Chile’s historical experience into a reflection with universal resonance.

From “The Battle of Chile” to his most recent works, Guzmán transformed Chilean memory into stories capable of connecting with audiences across cultures and generations. His career leaves a profound mark on the history of Chilean documentary and its international presence, paving the way for our stories to find a place and a voice in the world.

From “The Battle of Chile” to “The Cordillera of Dreams”, Patricio Guzmán’s work travelled for decades to some of the world’s leading international festivals, bringing Chile’s recent political history and memory to audiences across different continents and paving the way for the international development of Chilean documentary.
