The programme offers grants of up to US$5,000 to help filmmakers cover urgent safety and security needs.

The International Documentary Association (IDA) has announced that IDA Emergency Assistance, launched as a six-month pilot programme in March 2026, will now operate on a permanent basis to support independent documentary filmmakers facing threats related to their work.

During its pilot phase, IDA provided nearly US$60,000 in grants to 18 documentary filmmakers from 12 countries: Afghanistan, Armenia, Belarus, Iran, Morocco, Myanmar, Russia, Sweden, Uganda, the United States, Venezuela and Yemen. This was more than twice the amount of support the organisation had initially planned to provide.

The programme prioritises independent documentary filmmakers with limited access to safety resources and financial support who face threats from governments or other political powers. Applicants must demonstrate that the threats are connected to a documentary currently in production or a film they have previously made. The programme does not cover interpersonal disputes or unconfirmed future projects.

What Support Does the Programme Offer?

IDA Emergency Assistance provides grants of up to US$5,000 to help filmmakers facing urgent safety and security needs. Eligible expenses include visa costs to reach or remain in a safe location, as well as safety measures for film crews and collaborators. Support for crews and collaborators is limited to US$5,000 per film and must be requested by the director or producer.

IDA has also outlined its application response times. The organisation aims to respond to initial contact forms within one business day, while a full assessment may take around ten business days or longer, depending on the complexity of the case. Once a grant has been confirmed, funds will be disbursed within five business days.

The organisation is also building a network of partner organisations in regions where documentary filmmaking involves significant risks. These partners will help verify cases, connect filmmakers with professional networks and refer them to other sources of support when IDA cannot provide direct assistance.

The programme follows strict confidentiality procedures to protect applicants’ identities and safety.

For eligibility requirements and further information, visit the official IDA Emergency Assistance page.

The International Documentary Association (IDA) has made its emergency assistance programme permanent, providing financial support to independent documentary filmmakers facing politically motivated threats because of their work.
