14 abril, 2025

• As part of the MIC Chile Cultural and Creative Industries Market and the IX Ibero-American Congress of Culture, Chile’s Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage, Carolina Arredondo, and Uruguay’s National Director of Culture, María Eugenia Vidal, signed a Co-Production Agreement between the two countries.

• The agreement aims to promote and strengthen cultural exchange through film and audiovisual co-productions.

From April 9 to 12, MIC Chile took place alongside the IX Ibero-American Congress on Culture at the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center. The event brought together cultural representatives from the 22 countries that make up the Ibero-American community to establish strategic lines of cooperation.

In this context, the Audiovisual Co-Production Agreement between Chile and Uruguay was signed, aiming to boost the joint development of cinematographic and audiovisual works. The agreement, signed by Chile’s Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage, Carolina Arredondo, and Uruguay’s National Director of Culture, María Eugenia Vidal, sets out a series of measures to facilitate production, distribution, and mutual recognition in both countries.

“The national audiovisual industry is going through a very positive period. Together with ProChile, we have just reactivated the Film Commission Chile and taken the first steps, including the recent State visit to India, where we updated collaboration agreements and strengthened ties to position ourselves as a destination for international productions. Now, we’ve signed a co-production agreement with Uruguay that benefits and enriches the film industries of both countries, facilitating access to state support and the circulation of films and human capital—another area in which we are eager to keep moving forward,” said Minister Arredondo.

«This is a very important agreement for the development and growth of both our country and Chile—two significant markets at a global level. We believe it will be a fantastic opportunity for the many creators involved in the film and audiovisual sectors in both our countries,» said Uruguay’s Director of Culture, María Eugenia Vidal.

In the words of Paula Ossandón, director of Chiledoc and board member of the Chilean Documentary Corporation (CCDoc): «Uruguayan cinema has grown significantly thanks to a strong ecosystem of public and private support, as well as the promotion of international co-productions. The Instituto del Cine y Audiovisual (ICAU) provides funding that covers everything from development to distribution and the internationalization of productions. There are also regional, municipal, and cash rebate incentives. But above all, both countries share similar narrative styles that value auteur cinema, and intimate, socially driven stories. All of this makes Uruguay a very attractive window for Chilean audiovisual co-productions.»

With this agreement, productions acquire dual nationality, allowing them to access a range of benefits and support instruments from both countries. It also facilitates the expansion of budgets through co-financing between the parties, as well as access to funding from each of the co-producing countries. Additionally, it enables broader distribution circuits and opens up international markets, among other advantages.

The co-production agreement with Uruguay adds to those already in place with the Wallonia-Brussels region of Belgium, Spain, Argentina, Germany, Brazil, Canada, France, Italy, Venezuela, Peru, and Ecuador.
