Four Chilean documentaries arriving at Cannes Docs

Chile arrives at Cannes Docs with four documentaries that show the diversity and quality of our productions, with presence in markets and festivals, where they add prizes and recognitions. Chilean cinematography is going through a great moment and we will celebrate it at the Marché du Film.

● The projects will be presented to programmers, distributors, and sales agents, among others, at the documentary space of Marché du Film at the Cannes Film Festival, the most significant film festival in the world.
● In The Shadow of Ligjt, El Menor, Relentless Memory, and Life are the four films at the French market.

Docs in Progress Showcase Chile is the name of the event that, for the third year in a row, will be taking four Chilean films in the editing or post-production stage to Cannes Docs, the documentary space of Marché du Film -the most relevant audiovisual market in the world-, in Cannes.

The projects are In the Shadow of Light (Galgo Storytelling, Dos Be Producciones and Funky films), El Menor (Los Reyes del Parque), Relentless Memory (Errante and Gema Films), and Life (Lemuntu Producciones and Tótem Producciones).

There, the delegates of these projects will present to decision-makers, festival programmers, and sales agents from all over the world, among others. Previously, two Chilean projects, among more than 32 projects from eight countries, were awarded.

In 2021, Punto de Encuentro, directed by Roberto Baeza and produced by Paulina Costa and Alfredo García, won an important subtitling prize awarded by VOSTAO. Then, in 2022, Malqueridas, directed by Tana Gilbert and produced by Paola Castillo, won the Alphapanda Award for a digital marketing consultancy for the film.

Paula Ossandón, director of Chiledoc, says: «we thank Cannes Docs and its director Pierre-Alexis Chevit, for the opportunity to present us again in this space so relevant for documentary filmmaking, which allows us to make visible and contact Chilean projects with key industry representatives in the world».

The projects participating are:

In the Shadow of Light, directed by Isabel Reyes and Ignacia Merino, and produced by María José Díaz and Francisca Barraza, portrays the darkness of a town that transmits energy to the rest of the country.

In the Shade of Light

● Directed by Mijael Bustos Gutiérrez and produced by Diego Salvidia and Felipe Egaña Kaulen, El Menor is an intimate portrayal of Efraín, a marginal teenager who becomes a worldwide freestyle battle phenomenon and must deal with his sudden fame.

● In the Chilean-Argentinian co-production Relentless Memory, directed by Paula Rodríguez Sickert and produced by Paola Castillo and Gema Juárez Allen, a young Mapuche academic discovers in an unknown archive in Berlin, the testimonies of Mapuche prisoners who were expelled from their territories during the military invasions that founded Argentina and Chile.

Relentless Memory

Life, directed by Antonio Caro and produced by Michel Toledo and Antonio Caro, portrays Fresia, a young Mapuche woman who, when finding herself pregnant, has to interrupt her life in the middle of the Araucaria forests to go to medical centers and to the public hospital, where she finally gives birth to a daughter with a cleft palate.
