Synopsis

It is 2003, and «Chelito» becomes the first and brand new giraffe in the zoo of the city of Loja in Ecuador. His arrival, although not without controversy, makes the people of Loja proud and enhances the figure of its mayor, José «Chato» Castillo, who was behind the idea. At the same time Chelito dies. Some accuse mistreatment and adaptation problems; according to Chato Castillo, Chelito died because of loneliness, so he takes as a bastion for his reelection the bringing not only of a giraffe but of two giraffes so that they do not suffer from melancholy and summons the people of Loja to a «giraffathon» to raise thousands of dollars to bring them by boat from the USA. The campaign is a complete success but will bring a series of quarrels at all levels and a parade of characters including: animal lovers and veterinarians, a private detective tormented by poetry, a German scientist, two philanthropic old ladies and a bullfighter in search of himself.
